The Truth About Lip Filler

Lip filler’s new era

Redefine what lip fillers are as we debunk myths and show you the transformational power of this treatment.

Lip fillers have had a major glow-up since Kylie Jenner had us guessing whether it was just makeup or she got a little help . As Nurse Injectors, we’ve seen the trend shift—from XL big juicy lips to more proportionate and natural-looking results.

But, there’s still a huge misconception that lip filler will make you look duck-ish. Think about it. We tend to notice over-the-top filler, not the natural filler because, well, it’s natural-looking.

There’s more to lip fillers than the obvious.

Let’s take a look at what filler can do for you.

Hydration

Filler hydrates tired lips making them look naturally plump and                     youthful.

Fine Lines

Lip filler can smooth the vertical lines we get on our lips as we age.

Cupid’s Bow

Define your cupid’s bow and enhance your lip shape.

Volume

Restore volume that we naturally lose as we age, and give your lips a youthful appearance.

Symmetry

Balance your lips for a symmetrical pout.

And best of all..

Give yourself a confidence boost!

But Hilary & Arlena, I don’t want to look overdone!

Don’t worry. Here at Subtle Enhancements, we’re all about a less-is-more approach. We start with an assessment to go over your goals and decide on the best approach for your lips.

We also hear a lot of our clients saying “My partner doesn’t want me to get injections because they’re scared of me having duck lips.” Like, we hear this A LOT!

Guess what? Most of our clients still end up getting them done (as they should cause it’s for them and no one else) and 95% of the time their partner doesn’t even notice or loves them. We’ve been so conditioned to think that lip filler only looks dramatic and fake. But the reality is SO far from the truth.

It can be done so no one knows you’ve have anything “done”. No quacks, only the results you want.

The finer details about lip filler

What is lip filler made of?

We use hyaluronic acid based fillers to give you the lips of your dreams. Hyaluronic acid is a a naturally-occurring substance found in the skin that’s low-risk and well-accepted by the body when used as filler. Did you know hyaluronic acid can attract and retain up to 1,000 times its own weight in water, making it a powerful hydrating and tissue volumizing agent?! The brands of hyaluronic acid lip fillers we use is Restylane or Revanese (Greater Toronto Based-based, just like us!)

How do lip fillers work?

During a lip augmentation procedure, the filler is introduced into various areas of the lips using either a needle or cannula. The filler can be administered to different regions of the lip, including direct application within the lip tissue or along the edges of the mouth known as the vermillion borders. The former approach results in a fuller and plumper appearance, while the latter creates a more distinct and defined look for the lips.

Does lip filler hurt?

The lip region is known for its sensitivity, which means that the procedure may cause some mild discomfort. However, any discomfort you feel should be minimal. Prior to the treatment, it is probable that a numbing cream or local anesthetic will be administered to alleviate pain, and many fillers already incorporate lidocaine, an anesthetic agent that will keep your lips numb throughout the procedure. We also giving you distraction tools like a squeeze ball or vibrator to help trick your nerves.

How long does lip filler last?

This is dependent on the product used. The thicker the product, the longer it generally lasts. Normally lip filler can last 12-4 months. A way we can prolong lip filler a little longer is to inject Botox or Dysport in the upper lip to relax the muscle above the lip which reduces the muscle activity. When you reduce movement, we improve the longevity of fillers! It also prevents those dreaded “smokers lines” - a 2-for-1 treatment.

What if I don’t like how my lip filler looks?

As hyaluronic acid is the primary component within lip fillers, it's worth noting that if you're dissatisfied with the outcome of your lip filler treatment, it is possible to reverse the results using hyaluronidase, an enzyme. Once this enzyme is injected, your lips will gradually return to their previous appearance.

What are the potential risk to lip filler?

The most frequently encountered side effects include swelling, redness, and bruising in the treated area, typically subsiding within a period of 5-7 days. While in the process of healing, you might notice the presence of lumps and bumps, which should naturally resolve within 3-4 weeks. In case they persist beyond this timeframe, it is advisable to schedule a follow-up with your healthcare provider.

Although extremely rare, a potentially severe side effect known as vascular occlusion can occur. This happens when filler inadvertently enters an artery or vein during injection, potentially leading to significant complications. Detailed discussions about this risk will take place on the day of your appointment. It's important to emphasize that such complications are exceptionally uncommon. In the unlikely event that a vascular occlusion does occur, appropriate medications will be administered to dissolve the filler and restore proper blood circulation to the affected tissue. We take every precaution to minimize these risks through a comprehensive understanding of your anatomy, precise injection techniques, and vigilant monitoring for any signs or symptoms of vascular occlusion.
